Recap

On Day 1 we focused on “What is the curriculum?”
We considered the
  • National curriculum
  • Written curriculum
  • Hidden curriculum
  • Future changes to the curriculum

Activity: Reflect on your understanding of what the curriculum is and how it is changing in relation to your work.

Today we will be considering the planning of the curriculum.

We will aim to use our knowledge and understanding of the curriculum from Day 1 and further develop this through the planning of the curriculum directed task. Read each section and use the information and your own reflections to consider each area of your planning in detail.

Planning an activity

You will need to consider:
  • Pupil age and ability i.e. SEN G&T etc
  • Context and structure of lesson
  • Continuity and progression of the learning programme
  • Clear learning objectives for the activity
  • Teaching and learning styles – eg VAK
  • Questioning Skills – closed and open questions
  • Monitoring and Assessing
  • Feedback and Evaluation

Make sure you have all the information you need to make choices based on the above factors.

Planning an activity

Throughout this session focus on your directed task and begin to plan and develop your activity using the following lesson plan proforma:

ACTIVITY: Reflecting on your your own practice, discuss on the DISCUSSION pages how you would use
  • Your Professional skills
  • Knowledge of the pupils/students
  • Curriculum knowledge and understanding
to help you with the planning and delivery of your activity.

NB. It is important to remember that as TAs you work from the guidance of teachers.

What activity will I choose?

This could be a whole lesson (series of activities) or a single activity within a lesson.

Where does my lesson fit in with a Scheme of Work? The National Curriculum?

Think about how your activity could be made exciting, interactive, engaging and motivating for pupils. Here are some interesting projects in other schools:

Learning Objectives

What is your definition of a learning objective?

Consider these definitions. Are they similar or different to your definition?

  • “A learning objective identifies the skill development or knowledge acquisition anticipated as the result of effectively designed learning.”
  • “A statement establishing a measurable behavioural outcome, used as an advanced organiser to indicate how the learner's acquisition of skills and knowledge is being measured.”

Where would you find learning objectives linked to teaching and learning?

Identify learning objectives within the Primary and Secondary Strategies:
